This week I researched Hong Sung Chul. A south Koren sculptor who creates images by printing on elastic strings, displayed over a steel framed background.
I thought this was a really fun and interesting way to create images. The concept for his current work is a visual representation of what ties humans together from the beginning - The umbilical chord. The strings reveal a final representation - one of support or loneliness.
Another artist that I came across was Chihara Shiota. This Japanese born artist wraps objects in string and wool and creates a sort of dream like sense. The works suspended in time and space.
To me, her work looks as though it is almost exploding, bursting out at myself, the veiwer.
On reading, I discovered that Shiota's creations are to convey very personal and deep meanings. Memories of events or certain times in her life. For example, her instilation of a flaming piano, protray a particular fire the happened in her childhood.
